2002-2003 TABLE
OF CONTENTS Letter
From The Upper School Principal Dear
Cresset Christian Academy Student-Athlete, Welcome
to Cresset's interscholastic athletic program!
We are experiencing a time of tremendous growth, and I believe
the best is yet to come for the Eagles.
We are committed to excellence on and off the playing field. You
have the privileges of representing our Lord and our school because you
have made the commitment to participate in competitive sports.
Along with those privileges come responsibilities and
expectations. You are
responsible for maintaining a healthy balance between athletics and
academics. If you cannot
balance the two, it is possible that you could lose the chance to
participate. It is expected
that you will take responsibility for your individual behavior, as our
program is based on the Biblical principals of integrity and
self-discipline. We
offer a full athletic program for both girls and boys, so there should
be something available for just about everyone.
We desire to provide leadership, skill development, and
understanding to make the experience a positive one for you. The Department of Athletics hopes to see you reach your
potential while a participant at Cresset. If
you ever have any questions or need assistance, please feel free to stop
by and see me. May God
bless you this school year as we continue to "Run to Win!"
Upper School Principal 2 ".....they
will soar on wings like eagles..."
Isaiah 40:31 Cresset
Christian Academy is committed to providing an excellent athletic
program that seeks to honor Christ and obey His commands.
It is the mission of the Department of Athletics to provide a
broad-based program that provides educational and athletic opportunities
for our young people. The
Department is committed to developing student-athletes who display
discipline, cooperation, commitment, confidence, and self-control on and
off the playing field. It
strives to enhance the athletic experience by challenging the
student-athlete to integrate those traits into his/her academic, social,
and spiritual life. To
fulfill this mission, the Department, with approval of the Academy
Council, has developed principles that provide guidance and structure
for both its personnel and the student-athlete.
This Mission Statement and accompanying policies require the
commitment of all who participate in, coach in, and support Cresset's
Department of Athletics. 3 Cresset
Christian Academy's Department of Athletics requires coaches, trainers,
and all other support staff to conduct themselves in a manner in which
God is glorified and the Academy is represented in a positive manner. Student-athletes are expected to conduct themselves in a way
which upholds the same standards that they have agreed to as a student
at Cresset Christian Academy: Student-athletes
should seek to honor the commitment they have made to themselves, the
Academy, and God, both on campus and in the community. Those who fail to meet the standards are subject to the
appropriate discipline (suspension, dismissal, etc.). 4 Middle

/ STATE AFFILIATION Triangle
Middle School Conference The
middle school teams at Cresset Christian Academy participate in the
Triangle Middle School Conference.
The conference members include North Raleigh Christian Academy
(Raleigh), Magellan Charter School (Raleigh), Kestrel Heights Charter
School (Durham), Carolina Friends School (Durham), and Trinity Academy
(Raleigh). The conference
recognizes regular season champions and sponsors tournaments following
each season Triad
Conference Cresset's
junior varsity and varsity teams compete in the Triad Athletic
Conference. The conference
members include Calvary Baptist Day School (Winston-Salem), Carolina
Friends School (Durham), Oak Ridge Military Academy (Oak Ridge), The
O'Neal School (Southern Pines), and Westchester Academy (High Point).
The conference recognizes regular season champions and sponsors
tournaments following each season. NCISAA Cresset
Christian Academy is a
member of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association.
This state association is made up of private schools throughout
the state. There are three
classifications (1A, 2A, 3A) based on enrollment size.
The NCISAA governs all of their state sanctioned athletic events. 6 Age
Requirements According
to the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA),
a student-athlete who becomes 19 years of age on or before October 16th
of the current school year is no longer eligible to participate in high
school athletics. Gender
Policy According
to the NCISAA handbook, all sports are gender specific.
In other words, boys may only participate in boys' sports, and
girls may only participate in girls' sports. Grade
Level Participation According
to the NCISAA, 7th - 12th grade students are eligible for participation
on the varsity level. This
policy allows smaller schools to field teams when they might not
otherwise have the number of participants needed. Physicals All
potential student-athletes must have a physical prior to the first
practice. He/she will not
be eligible to participate until the physical form has been returned to
the school office. Basic
Athletic Eligibility Policy It
is important for each student-athlete to maintain consistent progress in
his/her academic courses. Evaluations
take place each 9 weeks, with periodic checks throughout each 9 week
period. 7 Fees Cresset
Christian Academy maintains responsibility for the selection and
purchase of necessary equipment and uniforms.
However, any items that remain the property of the
student-athlete are to be purchased by the individual.
This includes items such as shoes, socks, t-shirts, and other
similar items. Equipment Each
athlete is expected to care for his/her equipment, including uniforms,
balls, etc. If the
student-athlete is issued a school owned uniform, it should be cared for
according to directions on the uniform.
No student-athlete should alter, adjust, or in any way sew a
uniform or any other item that is the property of Cresset Christian
Academy. School
issued uniforms should be returned no later than one week after the last
game of the season. If
any uniform or equipment is damaged due to misuse or neglect, the
student-athlete will be held responsible and expected to replace or pay
for the item(s). Weight
training equipment is off limits without proper supervision.
Any student-athlete found using weight equipment improperly is
subject to suspension or dismissal from his/her team. Practice
and Game Attendance Student-athletes
are expected to be at all practices and games.
If a student-athlete is consistently absent, he/she will face the
appropriate penalties (loss of playing time, extra running, suspension,
dismissal, etc.). 8 Practices
may be conducted daily. Extra
practices may also be held on an occasional Saturday or during a holiday
break. With
the exception of being absent from school, the student-athlete should
give prior written notice to the coach for any absence to be excused.
Class
and School Attendance Student-athletes
are expected to be at school and on time.
A participant who is not in school by 10:00am or leaves school
before 1:00pm is not eligible to participate in athletic events for that
day. Student-athletes who
are absent from school due to illness may not attend or participate in
practices or games. Attendance
the day after an athletic event is expected.
Late nights may occur, but the responsibility of being in class
is still required. Classwork It
is the responsibility of the student-athlete to obtain class assignments
prior to leaving for an athletic event.
Participation in athletics requires time management and
preparation for classes. Student-athletes
should be prepared for class and should plan ahead for athletic
conflicts. Travel
to Games Student-athletes
will travel to and from events in Cresset Christian Academy sponsored
vehicles. A participant may
ride back with a parent or guardian when that individual is present at
the event. A
student-athlete may travel home with another adult only when prior
written permission is granted by the parent and the Upper School Principal. No other
students are allowed to ride with the team without written permission
from the Upper School Principal. Student-athletes
will honor dress code requirements while representing Cresset on
athletic trips. Hats and
caps are NOT to be worn. In
addition, personal electronics (Walkman stereos, Game Boys, etc.) are
not allowed on athletic trips. 9 Detention Student-athletes
who receive detention will NOT be excused for practices or games.
The detention must be served according to schedule. Suspension
/ Dismissal Coaches
may at any time suspend or dismiss a student-athlete who fails to comply
with athletic guidelines. Suspensions
due to game ejections are as stated by the NCISAA. Playing
Time When
participating in competitive sports, playing time will vary from player
to player. It is important
that each student-athlete understands that playing time is not
guaranteed. Middle school
coaches are instructed to maximize playing time, so that learning and
development takes place. However,
the coach has the responsibility of determining who should play when the
game is on the line. Junior
varsity and varsity athletes are expected to accept their roles on their
respective teams. Player
Movement It
is the mission of the Department of Athletics to do what is best for
each student-athlete, and we expect that each participant should play at
his/her age level. However,
there are situations in which exceptions can be made.
Players may be moved in the following situations:
- when there is no team for his/her
age group
- when another team is in need of
participants
- when an exceptional player would
benefit from playing at a different level and space is available on that team
(This situation requires the approval of the Upper School Principal, the coaches involved, and 10
Two
Sport Participation No
student-athlete may participate in more than one sport at a time.
However, there is one exception.
A team sport participant may also participate in an individual
sport during the same season. The
team sport takes priority over the individual sport regarding practices
and games/meets, etc. This
situation must have the approval of the Upper School Principal, the
coaches involved, the parents, and the student-athlete. Facility
Usage It
is the responsibility of the student-athlete to care and show respect
for the athletic facilities at Cresset.
Approaching
Coaches and Officials It
is a violation of both NCHSAA and NCISAA rules for any fan, player, or
coach to approach an official after a game. Persons
attending Cresset athletic events should refrain from approaching
coaches about concerns immediately following the event.
It is unfair to expect a coach to be prepared to discuss such
issues after coaching an individual or team. Communicating
Concerns If
a parent has a concern about a student-athlete or an issue regarding
Cresset's athletic programs, it is important that the proper channels
are followed. This is a
three step process. First,
any concerns should be brought to the coach in a timely, private manner.
If that does not resolve the issue, then the Upper School Principal should become involved. If
there is still dissatisfaction, the matter should be brought to the
Academy Administrator for mediation of the dispute. 11 Communication The
Department of Athletics produces a bi-weekly newsletter, The Eagle
Update, which will provide information regarding Cresset's athletic
programs. In addition,
seasonal parent meetings will be held to introduce coaches, pass out
schedules, and provide other important information.
For the latest updates regarding game schedules, directions to
schools, or other questions, please check our website (www.cressetchristian.org).
Athletic

now has a daily phone hotline for those needing information on a current
day's events. The hotline
number is 489-2655, ext. 251. Intercollegiate
Athletics / Scholarships It
is our desire to see our graduates participating in intercollegiate
athletics. The athletic
staff will make every effort to assist student-athletes who express an
interest in furthering their athletic careers.
